Cobalt PinkMay Luk's glaze meetings have been discussing Cobalt Pink glazes. Linda Bloomfield has written a report on their work:
High Magnesia Glazes - Currie grid test results (Electric kiln, cone 8)
In our search for a high magnesia satin matt glaze, we tried a crystalline matt glaze from Michael Bailey's Glazes Cone 6 (1240°C) book:
  • Soda feldspar - 42
  • China clay - 4
  • Bentonite - 2
  • Dolomite - 22
  • Whiting - 3
  • Zinc oxide - 5
  • Quartz - 22
  • +cobalt oxide - 0.75
We were looking for a blue glaze with small pink crystals. We made a Currie grid, which varies the amounts of silica and alumina to give 35 different test tiles. We found that cobalt pinks were obtained by using lower silica (<12% quartz) and higher alumina (12-25% china clay) with the fluxes in the recipe above (mostly soda feldspar and dolomite). We fired tests on porcelain and white stoneware in three different electric kilns to cone 8, some with controlled cooling. We found that the pink pyroxene (CaO.MgO.2Si02) crystals grew larger when given several hours' soak at 1100°C. We also tried adding 4% tin, which opacified the glaze.
Currie grids are explained in Ian Currie's book Revealing Glazes Using the Grid Method.
