I make functional salt glazed ceramics, with a particular interest in pots for
tea and coffee making and drinking.
They are designed to be both visually interesting and pleasurable to handle and
use, and to convey a sense of movement and balance through the use of open
rather than closed loop handles. Influences include early interests in aviation
and in the precision of engineered objects (I have a degree in Aeronautical
Engineering from the 1970s), together with European Modernism and contemporary
architecture.
The bodies and lids of the pots are thrown and the handles and spouts slipcast.
The pieces are then assembled from these components and after biscuit firing
sprayed with glazes and stains to achieve surfaces of varying colour and texture
from the final salt firing.
