What I enjoy most about potting is coiling, pinching, decorating and burnishing. It’s so enjoyable it’s difficult to stop. Sometimes I sawdust-smoke the pots on my drawing room fire. I particularly like pots made for a purpose (storing olives, oil, ashes etc). Several decades ago, I stopped being a writer and became a potter, my teachers being Tessa Fuchs and Ewen Henderson. I had 22 exhibitions in England, Egypt, America, Switzerland and France. After a time I became homesick for writing and tried to combine it with potting. This didn’t work so I returned to writing full-time. Now, after hearing someone talking about burnishing, I suddenly long to start potting again.
