I make mostly functional ware in stoneware or porcelain. Form is the initial concern, but I have a love of colour and enjoy using this within my work. Whilst trends currently are focused toward minimalism and Scandi design, I cannot resist the use of colour. I enjoy the visual impact that it can have on a piece, transforming it and bringing it to life. Influences often come from textiles – Kaffe Fassett, Indian sarees and the graphic qualities of textile design as well as day-to-day surroundings, signage and buildings.
I try to maintain a little looseness in my decoration as my internal tendency is to be controlling. There is a level of control that has to be given up when making ceramics and can be a life lesson as well as part of the craftsperson’s process.
