ASH, EMBER, FLAME a Japanese kiln in Oxford Guided Walk and Pot Handling Day 1 – Callum Forbes

February 4, 2022 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

With thanks to the Embassy of Japan and London Potter member and exhibition curator Callum Forbes, London Potters is thrilled to offer this special 2 hour event at the Embassy of Japanese in London – normally open to the public with 1 hour slots and without the pot handling opportunity.

Work fired in an anagama kiln is decorated by the interplay of the ash, ember, fire and atmosphere inside the kiln, which can behave in an erratic and unpredictable way. The kilns are uncommon in the UK, but the Oxford University Kilns project has built and fires three such kilns as part of an ongoing project of social making and communal learning. At the current exhibition at the Embassy of Japan, work that was produced for and fired in the 24th and 25th firings at the Oxford kilns is currently on display.

Join London Potter and exhibition curator Callum Forbes for a pot handling and exhibition walk through, to learn more about this form of firing, discover the project and opportunities to get involved, and handle and discuss the work produced in the kiln.
