In this workshop, attendees will be sculpting a small figure. Attendees will learn about basic body proportions and how these change with age, how to make an armature out of drinking straws to cheat at getting these proportions right. There will be hints and tips for changing stance to create a story, observational skills – what makes a figure seem young or old.
Jemma will be demonstrating and using slides to begin with (initial 30 minutes of the workshop) and then iterate between demonstration and attendees making their sculpture.
Please note that this course does not include demonstrations of sculpting faces to go with the figure.

About the Instructor: Jemma first trained for a BSc in Engineering Product Design, and worked in the fields of industrial design, production, and architectural model making before becoming a teacher of Design and Technology. With experience in making using a very broad range of materials, ceramics has become an abiding interest and specialism. She makes expressive and detailed porcelain figures exploring upbringing and attitude, using cast doll faces, fired dressmaker’s pins and mixed media.
Members are asked to bring:
- Basic pottery tools
- Sponge
- Bowl for water
- Apron
- Towel
- Notebook & pen/pencil
- Polystyrene blocks (from packaging – for holding up figure)
- Lunch, snack and drinks
Please note that this workshop is not held at a ceramics studio and therefore there will be no spare equipment available for loan.
