Path and Inspiration
Nature achieves multi-layered effects via the laying down of strata, weathering and erosion
I'm fascinated by the geometry in nature, especially as growth and random chaotic forces skew and distort the initial perfect symmetry. I'm constantly exploring these balances between symmetry and asymmetry, perfection and imperfection in my work
I'm drawn to irregular repetition, primitive mark-making and soft, earthy colours
I endeavour to allow for the accidental in my process and to embrace chanceProcess and Practice
I use Earthstone Grogged Porcelain, joining with a paperclay slip
First I colour the clay, usually with oxides, occasionally with commercial stains. I will then build up layers of different coloured clay, slicing and re-assembling several times to build up a block of patterned clay. The block is sliced to form slabs, which are then used to either hand build or slab mould my bottles, bowls or sculptural piecesNature achieves mu
