Path and Inspiration
Originally I went to Art School to study ceramics but was lured into Theatre Design instead at Wimbledon School of Art. After a career in film and theatre, followed by 20 years as a garden designer, I am surprised and happy to have come full circle and returned to my first love....ceramics!Process and Practice
I make hand built stoneware pieces inspired by birds, animals and natural forms. Each piece is burnished to a soft sheen and then coated with terra sigilata ( a fine suspension of clay in water) before being biscuit fired. The work is then exposed to intense heat and flames allowing the smoke and burning materials to infuse the clay body. Firings can be in a pit, a raku kiln or simply a dustbin. This low tech process is exciting and unpredictable and results in each piece being unique.
