Path and Inspiration
Anthea Williams studied sculpture at the Royal College of Art and worked across the sculpture and ceramics departments, always treating making art as an investigation where the artwork is discovered through the process of making.
As a result of Anthea’s practice of supporting her 3D work with drawing in pencil and charcoal, her current sculptural vessels explore the possibilities of making marks with and on clay, and express joy in the handling of materials.
Process and Practice
Using hand-built and wheel-thrown elements, Anthea constructs and manipulates the clay to produce ceramic artworks that are curious and visceral.
Anthea works in white stoneware and porcelain. She adds coloured slips, glaze and a dark gold brush on glaze to catches the light with a warm glow.
By creating vessels through conscious decision making and intuition, Anthea produces work combining bold form with alive and sensitive mark-making, sensing what to include and what to leave out.
