Path and Inspiration
I first got into ceramics about 15 years ago after many years working as a freelance textile designer. I have always loved mid century design and the artists of this period have a great influence on my ceramic work. I admire the freedom of mark making and abstract pattern and use of colour. I use mono print, resist, imprinted texture & relief carving to create multi layered abstract surfaces. My forms are mainly simple cylinder vases and tiles.Process and Practice
I hand build in stoneware clay & use abstract mark making on the surfaces using textures and mono print techniques with colour clay slips and oxides. At the next stage I use matt and shiny glazes and wax resist to create different surface effects. For some recent pieces I have also relief carved the surfaces of the vessels & tiles.I have also created a collection of standing stones and birds in black stoneware with incised abstract patterns.
