Path and Inspiration
My involvement with clay dates back to when I was 9/10 years old. 25 years later my interest was rekindled and I enrolled at SCOLA (now Sutton College) for the summer term in 1977. I have been potting ever since at SCOLA and with my own set up at home. In the early years I received much encouragement and guidance under the watchful eye of Brian Starkey and in 1991 Brian invited me to join the teaching staff to oversee the Friday evening class which I continued to do until 2010.Process and Practice
Most of my pots are thrown functional reduction fired stoneware or porcelain and are based in the ‘Leach’ tradition with references to the greats of studio pottery. Most of the glazes I use are based or developed from the classic glazes of China and Japan along with Ash glazes, each of which vary depending on the source of the wood ash used the position of the pot in the kiln and the atmosphere in the kiln each contribute and affect the outcome, sometimes serendipitously, sometimes less so.
