Path and Inspiration
I first studied ceramics as part of my art A Level at school and still remember the shock of my exam piece exploding in the kiln! After school I studied fashion and textiles at art college. However my passion for ceramics continued during this time when I visited Brick Lane each week and brought home a vase from the 50's and 60's. After careers in fashion, textile design and education I returned to classes in ceramics and am now a member of Cernamic studio in Stoke NewingtonProcess and Practice
My work is really about opposites - matt and shiny, black and white, the smooth whiteness of porcelain and the earthy texture of grogged stoneware clays. I am absorbed by the quiet process of throwing simple cylindrical forms in porcelain and the care and focus needed to finish and decorate it. I love the striking contrast with the excitement of raku firing; the smoke, the heat and the sometimes surprising outcomes.
