Path and Inspiration
Jon is a Wiltshire based structural engineer who took up pottery 5 years ago as a creative outlet from his more desk-based job. As an engineer he has worked with some of the worlds top architects which inspires aspects of this work. His engineering background is evident in his work with symmetry and precision in the forms but then finished with high flow glazes to create dynamic results. Most recently Jon was lucky enough to be a contestant on Series 6 of the Great Pottery Throwdown.Process and Practice
His work falls into two categories. His thrown work is primarily functional ware but with additional texture added through embossing, carving and additions. These are finished in a range of glazes which have been chosen for their high flow characteristics. His slipcast forms are digitally designed and then 3D printed in resin from which the plaster mold is cast. The resulting slip cast pieces then provide a canvas on which to experiment with a range of finishing techniques.
