Path and Inspiration
My work is primarily in figurative or low-relief ceramics. I enjoy the characters, scenarios, and hidden folklore that enrich a community. As a dedicated diarist, I often use writing as a means of working through a challenge. I like the idea of my work also in this context, a figurative other with which to have a dialogue through making. In this sense, I am interested in how time becomes a hand in my work, the idea of capturing a fragile, transitory state, which may be read hereafter.Process and Practice
Drawing and sketching is always the place where I begin my process. For larger pieces, I tend to work in a grogged paper clay. I will coil an initial form before working in detail. I may also choose to use press mould components, as I enjoy the contrast in texture and hard forms. My batchware is made from sculpted and slip-cast components. Decoration tends to be through engobe or terra sigilatta, transparent lead glaze and fired to 1160.
