Path and Inspiration
London born ceramic artist Jonquil Cook produces highly decorative and functional ceramic pieces from Thick as Milk studios in south London. Thrown and handbuilt stoneware forms are adorned with detailed sgraffito carvings. Apprenticeships and a background in Hanga wood-cut printmaking, extensive travel, a passion for design and a close observation of the natural environment, have informed her current ceramics practice.Process and Practice
Objects are a combination of hand built and thrown, turned, and then painted with oxide stained slip. At the leather hard stage carving takes place, always free hand, to reveal intricate designs. Each piece is entirely handmade and unique: no moulds or templates are used. The time and cost of making depends on the size of the finished piece and the complexity of the decoration. All of Jonquil’s ceramics are fired twice in the kiln, the final firing to 1260 degrees.
