Path and Inspiration
I graduated from Staffordshire University in the early nineties with a degree in Design (Ceramics) BA Hons. Following a long career teaching Art and Design in secondary schools, I began working as a full time ceramic artist in 2022, from my garden studio in Essex. My inspiration comes from the natural world, in particular objects collected which appear to be natural containers or which have protective qualities such as shells and seedheads.Process and Practice
My work is predominantly coiled, burnished and then following a low biscuit firing is smoke, sawdust or saggar fired with a range of combustible materials such as seaweed, natural foliage, salt and copper. I also make wheel thrown porcelain vases which are saggar fired in an electric kiln. For me the excitement in making comes in the experimental nature of these firing techniques, and how the fire is seemigly captured onto the surface of the work, making each piece unique.
