Path and Inspiration
I draw a lot of inspiration from Japanese pottery, especially the work of Shiro Tsujimura, Ryoji Koie and Takeshi Yasuda. I also admire the slipware work of Simon Carroll and Jean-Nicolas Gérard. They all work in a highly personal and expressive way, producing very soulful work that captures the moment of creation.Process and Practice
Most of my work is thrown in stoneware. I always start with the wheel – throwing a form and then stretching and altering it as the wheel is moving. This is a balancing act between control and letting go. I use the wheel as a way to express the movement and fluidity of the clay in an attempt to make the form as expressive as possible.
I use a mixture of slips and glazes: pouring, brushing, and spraying to try to create complex textures and patterns. I generally fire my pieces multiple times.
