Path and Inspiration
My vessels are contemplative and tactile, and are strongly influenced by my relationship with my surroundings, the Essex saltings landscape and the fleeting and ever-changing nature of life between the tidelines. In my work I seek to capture this soft estuary landscape by exploring organic patterns, textures, colours and forms, especially that which comes from the natural organic and weathering process.Process and Practice
I use a variety of hand-building techniques, to include slab building and flattened coils, using mostly my hands and a few simple tools.
My surfaces are decorated with soft coloured slips and then sometimes decorated with texture, marks or carefully burnished with a stone to obtain a sheen; no glaze is used. After an initial bisque firing, the vessels receive a secondary firing in sawdust using a masking technique.
