Path and Inspiration
I have been making pots since the mid 1970's and have never lost the sense of joy and wonder every time I open the kiln. Inspiration for my work comes from a lifelong and deep respect and admiration for Oriental ceramics and many of my shapes are without doubt influenced by early Chinese, Japanese and Korean ceramics. I have recently been revisiting some of my original sources of inspiration including Moon Jars, large serving bowls and platters.Process and Practice
Each piece is individually thrown and finished on the wheel and I often alter the shapes and attach handles while the pot is still soft enough to do so. I biscuit to 1000 degrees and I then decorate each piece using layers of stoneware glazes and oxides to create different surfaces and effects. I then fire to 1280 - 1300 degrees in an oxidising atmosphere.
