Path and Inspiration
I have been creating pottery since primary school but it was not until Lockdown that I became a full-time potter and created 'Nicola Martin Ceramics'. During this time I studied at West Dean College of Arts where I received tuition from celebrated ceramicists such as Kyra Cane, Tanya Gomez, Jo Davies & Jo Taylor. Participation in a turtle conservation project in Costa Rica, my love of the sea and nature, form the inspiration behind my work, specifically my signature 'Earth Bowls'.Process and Practice
I create unique stoneware pottery pieces with an emphasis on glaze decoration. The clay is my canvas upon which I create abstract images or art using different colours and textures of glazes. I specifically use a glaze pouring technique which creates a pattern or effect similar to that of an abstract view of the Earth seen from above. Unlike painting, the colours you 'paint' on the vessel are not the same as they are after firing. I love this unpredictability and alchemy.
