Path and Inspiration
Vases are hand built from stoneware clay slabs shaped around formers and pressed into moulds. The textural design is created with layers of underglaze pattern which graduates from darker at the base to lighter at the mouth. Pattern covers the surface, inside and out, and is brushed, sponged and printed onto the surface using silk screens and gel plates.
Process and Practice
My love of clay began with a sculpture evening class at YMCA and then a weekly ceramics class at Morley College. Inspired by tutors and fellow students at Morley, I enjoy the process of working with clay and now create vases, from tiny to tall, which have gently inclined sides and textural underglaze patterns that are screen printed, brushed, sponged and mono printed in layers. I find the process absorbing, challenging and ultimately rewarding.
