Path and Inspiration
I am mainly a self taught ceramic sculptor exploring the social economic, social political and global political factors that impact the human psyche. Classical sculpture and painting manage to capture faces with an essence of universal relatability and often juxtapose beauty and conflict. I endeavour to create such faces from the people I meet to tell their individual stories. Types of clay inspire my process as the combination of clays, textures achieved and finish add to the narrative.Process and Practice
The works are the result of interactions with individuals I have had and my response to them. Working in an intuitive way I hand build fictional characters to capture something of their experience of being human. I work with various clays depending on the themes, style and scale, exploring glaze, oxides and polished finishes. I am developing my practice to incorporate a variety of experimental processes to allow my work to be subjected to external processes that are beyond complete control.
