Path and Inspiration
I trained in ceramics at Camberwell College of Arts and after graduating in 1996, started working from my studio at Wimbledon Art Studios in 2000. I make trompe l’oeil textile texture vessels in porcelain, having stitched, upholstered, patchworked and embroidered fabrics myself. I aim to make pieces that are designed to be used and prompt curiosity and delight.Process and Practice
Having stitched a textile texture, I make a plaster cast of it from which I can press slabs of porcelain into and hand build from. I make paper templates to use as patterns on the textured slabs so that I can assemble the clay into jugs, vases and bowls. with the embroidered work, I paint cobalt over the stitched texture and fire it to give a rich blue sewn effect. Details such as upholstery buttoning and rims are highlighted with mother-of-pearl and gold lustres.
