Path and Inspiration
I set up my studio in Reading, Berkshire in 1985. Since then, my work has undergone considerable change, nevertheless, certain elements have remained constant. I have always emphasised form and structure over decoration set within the boundaries of basic traditional themes. My ceramics are not functional in the utilitarian sense of the word but derived from a culture of making pots.Process and Practice
All of my work is hand-built using stoneware. Whereas some pieces are glazed, most are burnished, bisque fired and then sawdust fired. The process of smoke firing ensures a variety of distinctive surface qualities throughout, at times subtle, and others striking, making each piece characteristically different, the result of the unpredictable action of fire on clay.
