Path and Inspiration
Sophie Cohen’s wheel thrown ceramics explore the balance between the robustness of clay and how the smallest movement of hands and the velocity of the potter’s wheel combine to create and shape the dynamics of a pot. She’s interested in the tactile experience of holding ceramics and often incorporates elements of texture in her work. She is inspired by classical shapes and architectural influences, and how these can be reinterpreted in a contemporary pot.Process and Practice
Sophie's most recent collections marry the precise lines of classical forms with heavily textured glazes, as if a finely thrown, elegant pot has been left by the sea to weather. Her work also looks at the dynamics shape and size and how different clay bodies react with a single glaze. She is part of the artistic community of Rochester Square Studios in Camden Town and a founder member of London ceramics/architecture collective, ceramicspace.
