Path and Inspiration
With a background in journalism and media, I only recently in the last few years, started exploring my artistic interest for ceramics and the infinite possibility of making objects with clay. I hand-build free form vessels and sculptures using techniques such as coiling, pinching and Kurinuki, a Japanese method of hollowing out from a solid block of clay, carving out a vessel to create 'interior space'. I combine my making of chawan & yunomi cups, tea caddies with researching Japanese pottery.
Process and Practice
First was the wheel .. but very soon I noticed I was gravitating more and more toward traditional hand building techniques. Lately my creative journey took me back to Kurinuki, my favourite techniques. Very instinctual. The Kurinuki method of making is all about energy. The motion is quick, but it’s not just the speed. It contains momentum. I divide my time between London and the South Cotswolds, where I am a member of the ClayLoft Open Access Ceramics Studio, where I make and create.
